More History of Swiss Watches

In the 20th century, watchmakers started to mass-produce timepieces.

That process, making use of interchangeable parts assembled by teams of factory workers, was implemented by watchmakers such as Frederic Ingold and Georges Lechot. Their work made the industry more efficient than ever without compromising the high quality of the product.

Mass production also made it possible to make wristwatches, which had been invented in 1868 and began to supplant pocket watches after World War 1. French soldiers started wearing them so they could read their watches while their hands were full. The first quartz watches were introduced in 1967, allowing for more accuracy than ever. Swiss watchmaking has always been well-positioned to adapt, change, and grow.
